(1943/1/23- )인디애나 태생 

어릴때부터 피아노렛슨을 받다가 버클리 음악원으로 장학생 입학. 바이브라폰(Vibraphone/바이브라폰/비브라폰)으로 전기공명장치가 부착된 철금(바이브라하프) 1960년(17세)부터 행크 갈란드/마이크 깁스/죠지 쉐어링/스탄 게츠 등과 협연. 여느 천재들이 그랬듯 게리도 약관 20세가 되기전 스타플레이어로 자리매김. 60년대말 사이드맨 시절을 청산 자신의 그룹을 결성 Vibes의 1인자로 등극 뿐만아니라 마일즈 데이비스가 그랬듯 수많은 후배들을 양성 (팻 매시니를 비롯).
