릭이 없는 상태에서 3인조의 형태로 발표된 /전후(戰後)의 꿈을 위한 진혼곡(A Requiem for the post war dream)/ 이라는 부제가 붙은 이 앨범은 'The wall'의 연장선상에 위치해 있는 작품이다. 1982년 4월, 아르헨티나의 군부 독재자 레오폴도 갈티에리(Leopoldo Galtieri)는 영국령(領) 포클랜드 섬(Falkland Islands)을 침공했고, 영국은 전쟁을 선포하기에 이른다. 대서양 남단 한 구석에서 스러져가는 수많은 젊은 생명들에 관한 소식을 들으며 로저는 2차대전 중 전사한 자신의 아버지 에릭 플렛처 워터스(Eric Fletcher Waters)를 생각했다. 결국 그에게 바쳐지는 이 앨범이 탄생하게 된다. 

'최후의 일격'이라는 앨범 타이틀은 셰익스피어의 작품 중 브루터스의 칼에 찔린 시저에 관한 언급 - 이것은 가장  냉혹한 일격이었다(This was the most unkindest cut of all) - 에서 영감을 얻어 붙여진 것이다. 로저의 정치적 관점과 전쟁의 무용성(無用性)에 대한 내용을 담은 비판적인 'The Wall'의 그것과 그다지 큰 차이를 보이지 않았으며 사운드 역시 독창성에 기인한다기 보다는 이전 스타일의 고수라는 성격이 두드러졌다. 메시지를 전하기 위한 노랫말에 비중이 커졌기에 당연한 결론일 수 있지만 사운드 자체의 완성도는 과거에 비해 떨어졌던 것이 사실이다. 

이제 데이빗과 닉은 물론 모든 일을 홀로 해 나가는 로저조차 자신들이 한 그룹의 멤버라는 소속감을 더 이상 가질 수 없게 되었다. 'The wall' 이전까지 밴드의 리드 싱어로서 자리해왔던 데이빗의 목소리를 들을 수 있는 곡은 Not now john 단 한 곡뿐이다. 어쨌든 이러한 여러 상황들과 앨범에 대한 악평과는 별개로 이 앨범은 가장 듣기 편한 핑크 플로이드의 작품 중 하나이다. * 앨범 해설은 http://www.freekid.pe.kr에서 퍼왔습니다.
