영국이 자랑하는 현대음악자곡가/바리톤 색소폰주자/베이스 클라리넷 주자/모던 발레음악가 

그는 런던 음악원(London College Of Music)에 영재입학(62년/18세)수석졸업 

66년(22세)에 음악박사학위 획득(London University Institute Of Education) 

이런 화려한 경력에 걸맞는 완벽한 음악을 구사하고 있는 그는 Mike Westbrook을 만나면서 장르를 초월하기 시작 

69년 존 매클러플린을 만나(Extrapolation)에 참여 퓨전의 창작에도 참여, 79년작 'Edges Of Illusion', 81년작 'Nestor's Saga', 88년작 'Portrait Of A Romantic'은 John Surman의 불후의 3대명작이다.
