(1945/5/8- )Allentown/Pennsylvania 태생 

음악가족에서 유전적 신동으로 태어난 그는 기록에 의하면 세 살때 피아노에 앉았다. 고전음악으로 기초를 닦은 그는 중학생때 Bill Evasn에 심취 재즈르르 공부하기 시작하여 16세때는 고향의 재즈클럽(Deer Head Inn)에서 최초의 재즈콘서트를 열었다. 이후 버클리음악원에 장학생으로 입학 뉴욕에서 주경야독하던중 Art Blakey에 픽업(65년) Charles Lloyd(66년) Miles Davis(69년)등의 대가들과 연속적으로 순회공연을 다니며 자신의 이름을 알린다. 68년에 Atantic 레이블을 통해 "Somewhere Before"를 발표했고 71년에 ECM에 스카웃 대망의 성공적 앨범 "Facing You"로 스타덤에 오른다. 

2005년 5월 2일(59세의 나이에 건재를 과시하는) 새앨범 "Radiance"을 발매 

오는 가을 Tokyo Concert DVD (일본에서의 150회 기념공연실황) 발매예정 

역시 발매예정인(Seoul Concert) Pat Metheny의 DVD와 함께 판매다툼을 벌일듯
